MAPLE 2018 - 2019
Welcome to Year 1’s class page
It is the start of a new school year and we are all extremely excited to be in Year 1. We will be taught by Mrs Williams Monday to Thursday lunch time and by Mrs Forrester on Thursday afternoon and Friday. This year, we are very fortunate to have the help of Miss Phillips each day. P.E. will be on a Friday morning taught by Mr Grooms from Premier Sports. We will also be having thirty minutes of Spanish on a Tuesday afternoon with a specialist Spanish teacher. We are all very enthusiastic about the year ahead and have a natural curiosity, as well as a readiness to learn. Everyone in Maple class will be working hard on core values such as Friendship, Responsibility, Curiosity and Creativity throughout the year; as well as lots of other exciting things.
In Literacy, we will begin reading the book ‘Lost and Found’. A story of friendship between a penguin and a young boy. As part of Geography, we will look at their journey as they travel by boat to the South Pole. We will also use maps of our local area to identify different landmarks within Childer Thornton. During a local walk, we will see if we can find them on our own journey. The text will also feed into class discussion about friendship and help us consider 'What is a true friend?' In Science, we will feed our curiosity by looking at 'Materials' and 'Seasons'. We will think about 'Which material is best for making a boat and winter clothes?' We will also be getting creative on with some Art projects linked to ‘Lost and Found’. After half term, we will read Nibbles The Book Monster and revisit some traditional tales, pausing to consider ‘What is the right thing to do?’ and ‘How can we be responsible?’
Spring term is going to be exciting we will be reading 'Lion Inside' and 'The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth'. We will be writing some amazing stories in Literacy and creating some eye-catching posters, again linking in some cross curricular learning. Science will include Animal Classification and we will be thinking about 'What makes me me?'
Summer Term – Watch this space!
This Term we have been working with High Impact on two exciting Projects. For our first project we used the Green Screen app to reenact the story of Lost of Found. In our second session we used the app Puppet Pals to create a short puppet show on the Great Fire of London. Please log on to Seesaw to see more!
Just a couple of points on how to support your child at home…
Five Daily Reads: One ‘Good Reader’ sticker will be awarded when your child reads five times in a week. Stickers are placed on a bookmark inside their reading diary. Wrist bands are awarded over time as children fill their bookmarks. Please keep your child’s reading diary and reading book(s) in their book bag as we really like to hear them read at varying times during the week.
Weekly Spelling Challenge: A Spelling Challenge book will be sent home every Friday. A quick challenge will be set, usually to make a short list of words with a particular spelling pattern (linked to Read Write Inc) with the option to write some sentences using some of the words on your list. Please return the book on the following Thursday.
MyMaths: Each Friday a short task will be set on MyMaths which will consolidate what has been taught in Maths that week. This will be due in on the following Friday. Login details for MyMaths can be found on the inside cover of your child’s Spelling Challenge book. If your child will be using an iPad or tablet to complete their MyMaths homework please download the Puffin Academy App and access MyMaths via the app instead of a web browser.
