Welcome to Year 1
September has arrived and it is time to begin a new adventure in Year 1! Mrs Williams, Mrs Forrester and Teaching Assistant Mrs Khan will spend the first couple of weeks establishing routines and getting to know each member of our new class. The children will share their holiday diaries and talk about the special family time that they have enjoyed during the summer break. We will think about where we belong, firstly as part of a family but also help each child to recognise that they are a very important part of our class and school. We will draw pictures and begin to write sentences about our family, homes and belonging. After these first few weeks, we will begin our theme for the Autumn Term: My World. This will focus on the local area. We will explore the immediate locality, identify key landmarks and compare Victorian and modern buildings. We will meet some important people in our community and think about how we can be responsible for the world around us. We also have plans to visit Eastham Woods and Holly Bank Wood in Thornton-Le-Moors. We will find out more about the history of Eastham Woods, investigate plant and animal life and may even go on a bear hunt! More details will follow in a letter home very soon. In Maths we will focus on numbers to 20 and 2d and 3d shapes. In Science we will look at Autumnal changes, materials and animal groups.

Just a couple of points on how to support your child at home…
Five Daily Reads: One ‘Good Reader’ sticker will be awarded when your child reads five times in a week. We strongly encourage children to read their Read Write Inc books at home too. They will be sent home alongside their reading book. Stickers are placed on a bookmark inside their reading diary. Wrist bands are awarded over time as children fill their bookmarks. Please keep your child’s reading diary and reading book(s) in their book bag at all times, as we often hear them read at varying times during the week. Thank you.
New for Year 1:
MyMaths: Each Friday a short task will be set on MyMaths which will consolidate what has been taught in Maths that week. This will be due in on the following Friday. Login details for MyMaths can be found on the inside cover of your child’s Reading Diary. If your child will be using an iPad or tablet to complete their MyMaths homework please download the Puffin Academy App and access MyMaths via the app instead of a web browser.
Learning Logs: A task linked to current class work is set every few weeks. The task will be stuck inside your child’s learning log which they decorated on transition day in July. The first log task will be set on Friday 27th September and due in Thursday 10th October. Further guidance can be found on the first few pages of the Learning Log. There will be Learning Logs completed by Year 1 pupils last year to flick through at Meet the Teacher on Tuesday 10th September at 6pm.
P.E. lessons will be delivered by our Specialist Teacher Mr Grooms on a Thursday and Friday afternoon. Please send in kit each Monday morning and leave in school all week as sometimes the P.E. timetable may change.

Thank you for your continued support!
